Background of the Study

Routine immunization (RI) campaigns play a critical role in reducing childhood morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases. In Nigeria, various government and non-governmental organizations have implemented immunization campaigns to ensure widespread vaccine coverage. Despite these efforts, Bauchi State still experiences gaps in immunization coverage due to logistical challenges, vaccine hesitancy, and inconsistent campaign effectiveness (WHO, 2024). Evaluating the effectiveness of these campaigns is essential to identify areas for improvement and ensure that targeted populations receive necessary vaccinations.

Statement of the Problem

Despite significant investment in routine immunization campaigns in Bauchi State, coverage remains suboptimal, with reports of missed children, vaccine stockouts, and misinformation affecting uptake. Assessing the effectiveness of these campaigns will help determine their impact on immunization rates and identify strategies to enhance future interventions.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current immunization coverage in Bauchi State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of routine immunization campaigns in increasing vaccine uptake.

3. To identify the challenges affecting the success of routine immunization campaigns.

Research Questions

1. What is the immunization coverage rate in Bauchi State?

2. How effective have routine immunization campaigns been in improving vaccine uptake?

3. What are the major challenges facing routine immunization campaigns in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Routine immunization campaigns have significantly improved vaccine uptake.

2. Logistical challenges and vaccine stockouts negatively affect immunization coverage.

3. Increased public awareness and engagement improve immunization campaign effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on children under five in Bauchi State and their caregivers. Limitations may include recall bias in self-reported immunization data and challenges in accessing remote areas.

Definitions of Terms

• Routine Immunization: The scheduled administration of vaccines to children to protect against diseases.

• Immunization Campaigns: Organized efforts to increase vaccine coverage through outreach activities.

• Vaccine Coverage: The proportion of the target population that has received vaccinations.
